After watching Roswell and Alpharetta thaw out over the past few days, I can truly say that most home owners are not aware of the risks involved with frozen pipes. Unfortunately over the past week, I was bombarded with local home owners struggling to repair frozen pipes. This blog post is being written to provide home owners with some guidance regarding proper care for your water lines during extremely cold weather.

Alpharetta Burst Pipe Plumber

There are a few things to remember regarding frozen pipes.
1. Each year over 250 Americans suffer frozen pipes in their homes. So this is a comforting reminder that you are not alone.
2. These repairs can often be rather expense, as the water can cause significant damage to your home.
3. PVC and copper pipes can freeze and burst.

Cumming Frozen Pipes

So, what are the five steps to avoid these pitfalls?
1. Evaluate your home and determine potential problem areas.
-Exterior Walls
-Basements and Crawlspaces
-Unheated areas
2. Seal any leaks that are allowing cold air to seep into your home.
3. Be sure that everyone in your home, including your neighbors (if trusted) know where your main water shut off valve is. This is more of a last minute prevention, to potentially keep a frozen pipe from bursting.
4. Insulate any bare piping. In seriously cold areas, it is also best to insulate your hose bibs and even your water meter.
5. The Trickle effect. For a last measure of security, be sure to allow a small trickle out of your exposed piping. The water bill should only be impacted a marginal amount.
